DWGD Assist Angel Gallardo in the Design of Three New Spanish Courses

12th Hole at Guadix Golf

Following their successful collaboration at PGA Golf Catalunya (also with Neil Coles), DWGD have been asked again by European Tour Vice-Chairman Angel Gallardo to work with him in the creation of three new 18 hole courses throughout his native Spain.

At Guadix, a few miles from Granada in Andalucia, the practice has designed Guadix Golf, an 18 hole layout, with dramatic views of the Sierra Nevada range of mountains, Europe’s most southerly skiing area.

Most of the course is on relatively open land, but four holes in the southern extremity are separated by dramatic tree covered valleys, necessitating extensive bridging between the holes to allow continuity of play. The overall development, which recently received planning consent, also includes over 2,000 houses, an hotel and spa, theatre, commercial area and sports centre.

Much further north and located in the La Rioja region south of Bilbao, DWGD and Angel Gallardo have collaborated in the design of an 18 hole layout in a dramatic site near the town of Escaray, close to the city of Logrono.

The development on difficult sloping terrain also includes the provision of 7 small villages, thereby ensuring that the course and housing fit well into the local landscape rather than appearing as an artificially imposed resort settlement in this relatively rural area. The project also includes an hotel and major practice facilities.

10th Hold on the Tour Course

The third project re-unites DWGD with Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles in the provision of a third 18 hole course at PGA Golf Catalunya, where the first two courses have received rave reviews since their construction.

The Stadium Course built in 1995 has already hosted the Spanish Open on a couple of occasions and has been ranked in the top two courses in Spain as well as in the Top Ten courses on Continental Europe in recent publications. It has also been rated in the Top 100 courses in the world in recent listings.
