Dwgd Team Disappointed At Ryder Cup 2022 Decision
April 9th, 2016
The Stadium Course at PGA Golf Catalunya, designed by DWGD in co-operation with Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo, has for many years now been regarded as the No.1 course in Spain. As such, it was the appropriate choice for the Spanish Golf Federation when they submitted their bid for the 2022 Ryder Cup, also fully supported by all the golfing and political organisations within Catalunya itself.
Spain was bidding against Germany, Austria and Italy in the final round of bidding, and it was generally assumed that Spain and Germany – with their existing mature host courses – were the favourites to be awarded the prestigious Tournament.
However, when the decision was made by the European Tour in December 2015, there was surprise throughout Europe when Italy was awarded the Tournament. David Williams comments ..”I had been in very close contact with those at PGA Catalunya over the preceding weeks and months, and all there, especially their Head Greenkeeper, David Batallé, were extremely confident that they had met all the European Tour’s requirements in the numerous inspection visits that the Tour had held at the course and complete venue over the preceding weeks and months.
We were all extremely disappointed that Europe’s most prestigious event will not be held over the Stadium Course, but that will not prevent its quest to retain its Spanish No.1 position, and also reinforce its award as Europe’s No.1 golfing destination, awarded both in 2014 and 2015”.
