David Williams Returns to RCG Las Palmas to Resume Implementation of 2018 Masterplan
November 10th, 2021
David Williams, Principal of David Williams Golf Design, prepared an initial Masterplan for Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, the oldest golf club in Spain, in May 2018. In November of that year, he returned to the island of Gran Canaria to modify the plan and to present it to a small group of members.
Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic prevented his return to start the implementation of the plan until this October, when he revisited the club to finalise the plan and oversee the initial reconstruction work, which included the creation of a couple of new tees, and detailed discussions with the club on the future treatment of the sixty or so bunkers which protect the course.
During the visit, these discussions included conversations with Salvador Cuyas Morales (President), Mark Hammond (Captain) and Javier Suarez Fuentes, the former General Manager of the club, who has taken over responsibility of the implementation of the masterplan, as well as writing the book to celebrate the club’s 130th Anniversary, which it celebrates this year.
Also during the week long visit, Williams took the opportunity to inspect the course with the club’s new Head Greenkeeper Fernando Suarez, who passed on his own thoughts on the future direction and development of the Mackenzie Ross designed layout.
Initial work undertaken this year includes new tees on the 5th and 9th holes, and Williams also took the opportunity to discuss additional forward tees for ladies, seniors and juniors, as well as mark out on the ground several possible options for these features.
The intention is that Williams revises and updates his 2018 Masterplan to take into account recent developments and thoughts, before presenting the final version to a full meeting of all the members in Spring next year.
