CONWY GOLF CLUB TO HOST 2006 OPEN FINAL QUALIFYING

Members at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club were delighted to hear recently that the Club has been selected to host one of the Final Qualifying rounds for the 2006 Open, when the Open itself returns to Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake. Four historic links courses have been chosen for the final Qualifiers; the added significance is that Conwy has become the first Club in Wales ever to be selected for final Qualifying.

DWGD’s involvement at Conwy has been significant over the years, most particularly in the design of the new 2nd green which opened for play in 2001. Previously, this green was the only one not on a sandy subsoil base, being built on a clay base during World War II.

David Williams describes ..Unfortunately, this green was quite often the only one that became very wet in winter conditions, and therefore the only one that was played to a temporary green on a regular basis. The reconstruction has not only allowed it to be utilised all-year round, but its enlargement and re-design has also produced a very dramatic and strategically challenging short hole.

DWGD have been involved for many years at Conwy, and over ten years ago introduced many new tees and over 30 new fairway bunkers to add to the strategic value of the course.

DWGD SELECTED TO ASSIST WELSH JUNIOR GOLF FACILITIES

DWGD have been selected by Golf Development Wales to provide assistance to existing clubs in creating and improving practice facilities for juniors in clubs throughout North and Mid-Wales.

With initial fees for site visit, feasibility study and sketch proposals met by Golf Development Wales, clubs are able to obtain expert advice on proposals from DWGD without charge.

To date, Penmaenmawr and Holywell Golf Clubs have benefited from the scheme; DWGD are also assisting the Rhyl Regeneration Project in the possible creation of a nine hole Par 3 layout as part of the same scheme.
