NEW MILLS GOLF CLUB Par 3 Requiring “Delicacy of Touch” Is Talking Point In New Mills, New 9 Holes
New Mills Golf Club, a 9 hole course situated high in the Peak District only a few miles from Stockport, Greater Manchester, was extended to a full 18 hole layout with nine new holes constructed in 2000 to DWGD design.
The 9 holes, approximately 2750 yards in length and with a Par of 34, have been added to the existing nine to create a new layout of approximately 5700 yards in length and a Par of 70. Constructed by M. J. Abbott Limited, the contract also included a fully automatic irrigation system to greens, tees and approaches, also installed by M. J. Abbott Limited.
Having been looking forward to the extension to 18 holes for a great number of years, Club Members were delighted when the new holes opened for play in Summer 2002.
David Williams explained that the new hole which proved to be the main talking point was the dramatic, short, downhill Par 3, 4th, played just over 100 yards in length but to a wide but very shallow green guarded by dramatic bunkering across the complete front, with steep slopes to the side and rear.
As David explains, the great golf course architect James Braid stated that every course should have “at least one Par 3 requiring delicacy of touch”, and the 4th at New Mills certainly fulfils that criteria.<< Back to Golf Course Extensions
