CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH GOLF CLUB

Course UpgradesCHANGES TAKE CHAPEL GC OUT OF THE RECORD BOOKS

Many golf clubs seek to be included within various records in golfing anthologies, but one club that will be pleased to be taken out of the record books following reconstruction in 2000 is Chapel-en-le-Frith Golf Club in the High Peak of Derbyshire.

As David Williams explains ..”Chapel GC is an historic course being originally constructed as a 9 hole course in 1905, that 9 holes now forming the front nine of the existing layout.

A second nine was added during the 1970s, but the result was that, with a difference of over 700 yards in length between the short front nine and the much longer back nine, the Club was in the record books as having the greatest disparity in length between nines of any course in the UK. As well as the disparity in length, there was almost an equivalent distance physically between the two nines, with all players having a long walk to the 1st tee from the new clubhouse, and then again between the 9th green and the 10th tees”.

Golf ArchitectureThe three new holes, a Par 3, a Par 4 and a Par 5, have been constructed by John Greasley Limited, with an irrigation system installed by Irrigation Control Limited. These three holes have been assimilated into the existing front nine, which has been re-designed losing three of the existing greens. The result has been to increase the course from its existing 6054 yards Par 70 layout to 6527 yards and a Par of 72, as well as eliminating the present long walk between the two nines and allowing the new 1st tee to be much closer to the existing clubhouse.
