OVER A HUNDRED NEW HOLES ON THE DRAWING BOARD!

DWGD have now been commissioned to create a further six new 18 hole courses which will produce the second century of holes this millennium, with early design stages currently on the drawing boards (and computer screens!) in readiness for planning applications and detailed design later this year.

Great Orme Golf Course18 of the holes have been designed on the Great Orme, the dramatic 600 foot high headland overlooking the resort of Llandudno in North Wales (photo right). The 150 acre site purchased at auction by Dean Saunders, the well-known Welsh soccer international, offers magnificent views in all directions over the town and the river of Conwy, the mountains of Snowdonia, the Menai Straits and Isle of Anglesey, as well as over the Irish Sea itself.

As David Williams explains, "Not only is the site an extremely dramatic one, it is also very well protected, being in an area of Special Scientific Interest, an area of Special Conservation, a Heritage Coastline of European Significance, as well as being a popular and well-used Country Park. Because of this, many detailed studies have been undertaken (right) into various aspects of the project, with over two years being required prior to the planning application even being submitted. However, in November 2004 the Planning Authority gave their first positive response to the application in confirming that "they were minded to grant consent". Detailed design and further studies are expected to continue throughout the remainder of 2005.

Golf Course ArchitectDWGD have been commissioned to design a 36 hole layout on the outskirts of Colchester in Essex. As well as the two golf courses, the overall project will include sailing and rowing lakes, a horse riding route/bridleway around the complete perimeter, and numerous picnic areas taking advantage of the exciting new landscape to be created.

DWGD and David J. Russell have joined together again as D J Golf Design to create a new 18 hole parkland golf course to be known as The Derbyshire, to the north-east of Derby.

Designed in the traditional two loops of nine returning to the clubhouse, the course will extend to over 7200 yards in length, and with the benefit of an extremely high specification, is intended to be one of the highest quality courses built in the area, and a possible tournament venue.

ArchitectureAngel Gallardo, who has worked closely with DWGD at PGA Golf de Catalunya, has commissioned the practice to assist him in the design of an 18 hole resort course to be known as Guadix Golf (photo right) close to Grenada in southern Spain. Part of an overall housing and golf development, the site offers magnificent views of the usually snow-covered Sierra Nevada range, the southernmost skiing resort in Europe, which is only a few miles from the development.

DWGD designed the popular 18 hole course at Kingshill, near Maidstone in Kent in the mid 1990s, and the course has gone from strength to strength as the surrounding Kingshill integrated development has grown since that time. The practice has now been commissioned to add a further facility, an 18 hole high specification Par 3 layout, which will add greatly to the golf facilities at Kingshill.
